Original Banner Art Exhibition & Auction
Artists will create original banner art which will be placed on the historic and beautiful property of The Inn At Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego, California. In the Spring the banners will be auctioned off to benefit the artists and the Balboa Park Conservancy. Please see below for more information.
Event Information
Art’s A’ Thrive-Inn® will take place on the historic and truly beautiful property of The Inn At Rancho Santa Fe (Inn at RSF) in San Diego County. The event will take place over multiple months giving a unique opportunity for the public and the community of Rancho Santa Fe to enjoy a socially distanced art exhibition. In addition, it will also benefit, through a portion of the proceeds, The Balboa Park Conservancy, which is the non-profit of choice this year.
The exhibition is a display of original banner art that will be placed throughout the property of the Inn at RSF (see the banner art placement map) for multiple months culminating in an auction that will benefit the artist and the non-profit. This will all be happening with the GENEROUS support of our Sponsors and the Inn along with our team partners. The artist’s commitment after receiving the raw banner is time, the art materials and the finished original banner art. There will be a small number of participating photographers, printers and sculptures who will be invited and displayed in a separate pavilion.
Art’s A’ Thrive-Inn® is multi-month art event with the intention of supporting local artists through the sale of the original banner art and through a contribution to the Balboa Park Conservancy (BPC). The proceeds are split 50/50 with the participating artists and the BPC. The expenses of the Arts A Thrive-Inn Exhibit are financed through sponsor contributions. The Art’s A’ Thrive-Inn® exhibit will be hosted and sponsored by the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe in RSF (TIRSF), San Diego on their beautiful property. In addition, there will be an “Art Pavilion” on property showcasing sculpture, photography, and print making. There will be invite to 60 artists in total to bring a sophisticated perspective to this exhibition.

There are strict regulations on the artistic content of the banners.
- No political statements
- No religious icons
- No nudity
- No profanity
- The Inn At Rancho Santa Fe and the organizing committee can and will reject any banner that they deem to be unsuitable.
TIME-LINE*
- August 2020 - Sponsors, exhibition site & non-profit identified
- October 2020 - Event publicly announced
- Late October 2020-Artists are selected and invited
- November 2020-Artists publicly announced
- Late December 2020 - Selected artists pick-up their paintable banners (photographers will send in their image files at a future date to be professionally printed on their banners)
- Late March 2021 - Artists return their completed banners
- Late January 2021- Preview of completed banners on-site for a “First Reveal” display at The Inn. Attendees may place early silent auction bids. No host event at The Inn
- February - mid-March, 2021- Banners are photographed and published in an 8 1/2" X 11" full-page, four-color auction guide along with a description of the banner theme and contributing artist/photographer.
- Mid-March, 2021- Banners are installed throughout property of The Inn in a socially distant manner
- Mid-March - Early May, 2021 - The public can enjoy themselves as they stroll through and view the artwork. If so inclined they can call in, email or text a bid on their favorite banner/s.
- Mid-May 2021- Public reception at the Inn’s front lawn (socially distant) with live auction and auctioneer on the Terrace. Public bids on their favorite banners. Winners check out and take their banners. Proceeds are split accordingly.

The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, a Tribute Portfolio Resort & Spa by Marriott, is a rustic boutique resort perched atop the hills overlooking San Diego. The 21-acre property’s simplistic Spanish-California architecture integrates harmoniously into the natural landscape to create a serene country escape. This historic San Diego resort and spa is a destination for comfort, camaraderie and relaxation as well as romantic retreats, creative California cuisine, a holistic wellness spa, whiskey bar and breathtaking weddings & events.
HISTORIC CHARM, MODERN CONVENIENCE
The enchanting Village of Rancho Santa Fe is a historic and genteel hamlet with The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe as its cornerstone. The area was originally part of a land grant deeded by Mexico in 1840 to the first mayor of Pueblo de San Diego, Juan Maria Osuna, whose family and descendants lived on the expansive ranchero property for many years. In 1906, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad purchased the land and planted massive groves of eucalyptus with plans to convert the trees into railroad ties, but when the wood proved too soft and the Eucalyptus experiment failed, a new future in citrus unfolded. Surveyor and land expert Leone Sinnard was hired by the Santa Fe Land Improvement Company to create a high-class horticulture development of “gentlemen farmers” to create fruit tonnage for the railways. In 1922, the planned community was born, bearing the name Rancho Santa Fe.
Respected architectural firm Requa and Jackson, the team responsible for the quaint town of Ojai and several Spanish Revival-style buildings in Balboa Park, were enlisted for the project. Their recent hire, Lilian J. Rice, a young San Diego visionary and one of the first women to graduate from architecture school at the University of California, Berkeley, championed the village’s development. Influenced by the original Osuna Mexican adobes in the area, her travels to Spain and Cuba, and her great appreciation of nature and outdoor living, Rice created a village with unique architecture in harmony with the land that remains today.
LA MORADA
Rice’s first building, a guesthouse in the Spanish Revival-style was called La Morada, “the house of many rooms.” Originally intended to provide accommodations to prospective property owners, La Morada became the social focal point of the village with its cozy lobby, sunlit patios, commanding position on the hill and epic panoramic views of the natural setting.
Rice’s vision of rustic simplicity and attention to aesthetically pleasing details liken red-tiled roofs, iron work, arched recessed entrances and windows that framed the outside beauty, along with the integration of the natural environment, set the tone for the village and the future resort. In 1940, La Morada was transferred into private ownership and renamed The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, a luxury hotel.
Rice designed and supervised the building of Rancho Santa Fe’s central community from 1922-1928, determined to create the “quiet serenity of a Spanish village.” She also went on to design over 50 private homes that also reflected her style and passion.
Rice declared, “I have found real joy at Rancho Santa Fe. Every environment here calls for simplicity and beauty: the gorgeous natural landscapes, the gently broken topography, the nearby mountains. No one with a sense of fitness, it seems to me, could violate these natural factors by creating anything that lacked simplicity in line and form and color.”
